The Carrollton Bus Crash Of 1988

Larry Mahoney was your average 36 year old man who worked hard and cared about his family. One night he decides to go out and release some stress and go out and have a good time. He makes multiple stops having some drinks at each. He is leaving his last stop which is his good friend’s house and his friend tries to convince him not to drive in the condition he’s in. Mahoney assures his friend he will be fine seeing as how his house is not a long distance away. With his impaired senses Larry Mahoney drives down the wrong way of an on ramp getting on Interstate 71 going the wrong direction. In the blink of an eye Larry Mahoney changed the lives of millions of people across the state.

A bus full of loud laughter, happy smiles, and the joys of being a kid is traveling home to Radcliff, Kentucky on Interstate 71. The joy in their hearts is at an all-time high because these kids are on the way back from King’s Island amusement park. The excitement of the day is fresh on their minds from all the roller coasters and being on a trip with their friends. Sadly the joy and excitement these kids were feeling will soon turn to tears and sorrow as their path is about to cross that of Larry Mahoney.

Larry Mahoney hit the church bus head on causing the bus to be engulfed in flames. The kids onboard scrambled helplessly as they tried to find the exits. Due to the poor construction and design of the bus the only way to leave, besides the front door, which was blocked, was the tiny emergency exit located at the back of the bus. As the fire began to spread more kids started to be engulfed in the flames, which blocked the aisle and exit. The bodies started to pile up prohibiting anyone to exit. When all was said and done Larry Mahoney walked away from the crash while 27 out of the 67 passengers on the bus died. The Carrollton Bus Crash will go down as the most horrific bus crash to ever occur in the United States.
